Chuang Yen Monastery will be hosting a gathering to practice the Medicine Buddha\u2019s teaching from November 29<\/span>th<\/span> to December 1<\/span>st<\/span>, 2024. During the retreat, we will recite the Sutra<\/i> on the Original Vows of the Medicine Buddha\u2014the King of Vaid\u016brya Light<\/i>  (also known as the Medicine Buddha Sutra<\/i>) and perform the Compassionate Medicine Buddha\u2019s Jeweled Repentance<\/i> Ritual<\/i>. We will also offer the opportunity for devotees to light blessing lamps or to sponsor other services during the retreat.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Medicine Buddha Sutra<\/i> was spoken by the \u015a\u0101kyamuni Buddha in response to a request from Ma\u00f1ju\u015br\u012b Bodhisattva. It expounds on the virtues of the Medicine Buddha of the Pure Land of Vaid\u016brya Light in the Eastern direction. This sutra primarily describes the Medicine Buddha\u2019s name, his Buddha-land, and the twelve great vows he made while practicing the Bodhisattva path in the past. Because different buddhas and bodhisattvas have different vows, there are various practices that correspond to the different vows. The practices associated with the Medicine Buddha are prescribed for those suffering from physical or mental illnesses and those facing death. After the \u015a\u0101kyamuni Buddha expounded on these practices, Brahm\u0101, Indra, and twelve yak\u1e63as who were each accompanied by ten thousand followers, vowed to protect anyone who recites the Medicine Buddha\u2019s name.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

During the retreat, we will recite the\u00a0Sutra\u00a0on the Original Vows of the Medicine Buddha\u2014the King of Vaid\u016brya Light\u00a0 (also known as the\u00a0Medicine Buddha Sutra) and perform the\u00a0Compassionate Medicine Buddha\u2019s Jeweled Repentance\u00a0Ritual.
