Poetry is the song of spiritual experience,\u00a0a means to communicate insight into the\u00a0contact of awakening.<\/p>\n

Renowned poet & professor Russell Leong, who was featured as one of the 50 U.S. poets on the PBS series “The United States of Poetry\u201c in 2008, \u00a0is kindly accepted our invitation to read from his book \u2018The Country of Dreams and Dust\u201d \u00a0(\u8bd7\u96c6\u300a\u68a6\u5c18\u300b)(West End Press).<\/p>\n

This work received the PEN Josephine Miles Literature award.<\/p>\n

\u201cCountry\u201d is about many countries, including China, Vietnam, and the U.S.
\n\u201cDreams\u201d is about the expectations and desires of migrants, and
\n\u201cDust\u201d is the\u00a0social and spiritual realities of life in the new land.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The characters in his poetry\u00a0and short stories are ancestors, parents, slaves, the rejected, and the betrayed\u00a0within both Asian and American societies and their search for inner truth and\u00a0peace.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n


\n<\/a>Russell Leong believes that the power of social transformation can be found in the people at the margins of society,\u00a0and that Buddhism can transform our nature if we let go and have an open mind.<\/p>\n

Russell Leong (\u6881\u5fd7\u82f1)<\/strong>
\nFeatured with 50 U.S. poets on the PBS series “The United States of Poetry\u201c in 2008, for 30 years, Leong was the chief editor of Amerasia Journal, published by the UCLA Asian American Studies Center, and an adjunct professor English and Asian American Studies at UCLA. Amerasia is the foremost scholarly journal on the history and culture of Asians in America. He is now the visiting Dr. Thomas Tam professor at CUNY Hunter College.<\/p>\n

He studied sociology in the U.S.,at San Francisco State College, comparative literature at National Taiwan University, and film at UCLA, where he obtained his Master of Fine Arts in Film and Directing. He is the author of \u201cPhoenix Eyes and Other Stories\u201d (University of Washington Press, Washington), winner of the American Book award, and edited \u201cAsian American Sexualities\u201d (Routledge Press, London), and the editor of \u201cWar and Peace\u201d Asian Americans after 9\/11(UCLA), and many other volumes.<\/p>\n

Leong also wrote many essays and poems for \u201cTricycle: The Buddhist Review\u201d (New York) and his work has been translated in Taipei, Nanjing, and Shanghai.<\/p>\n

Russell Leong was born in San Francisco Chinatown in 1950.<\/p>\n
