In the Sutra the Buddha instructs his disciple Mahamaudgayayna on how to obtain liberation for his mother, who died and had been reborn in a lower realm, by making food offerings to the sanga on the fifteenth day of the seventh month (Lunar Calendar). The merit accrued from these acts of piety and devotion will be dedicated to the donor\u2019s parents of this life and those of the previous seven lives to repay their parental kindness.
