Chang. According the law of New York Religious Corporation\u00a0 \u00a7 191 &amp; \u00a7 193 , the board applied to establish BAUS, the Buddhist Association of the United States.<\/p>\n<p>1964.10.21<\/p>\n<p>According to the law of New York Religious Corporation, Bronx, New York, formally approved the establishment of the BAUS. (Certificate No 76531)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1965<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With the assistant of \u201cWisdom Torch\u201d magazine in Taiwan, BAUS started to award \u201cMila Scholarship\u201d. There were 47 people were granted for this first year. Over the years until 1983, the total reached up to 670 persons. Many winners later became well-respected Buddhist masters and scholars. Fresh water had been poured \u00a0into Buddhism studies. Master Xingyun was on the jury once.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1966<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lay devotee Buddhists Dr. C.T. Shen and his wife, Woo Ju Shen, purchased an abandoned building (the now Temple of Enlightenment) and leased it to BAUS (before the tax exempt status was approved). After diligent efforts putted together from the monastic and lay devotees, this ruin finally turned into a solemn temple.<\/p>\n<p>Note: the tax exempt was granted in 1969.4.11<\/p>\n<p><strong>1967<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>BAUS held the first 7 days Amitabha Retreat. Up until now in 2014, the Amitabha Retreat has gone on to its 48th year.<\/p>\n<p>Photos:<\/p>\n<p>The 3 buddhas and Wei-tuo Bodhisattva were enshirned since Ven. Lok to.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1968<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1968.02.11<br \/>\nSpecial Membership Meeting held for the by-laws of BAUS and detailed Articles. A steel constitution was engraved, making sure that the objects and purposes of BAUS is to practice and preach Buddhism.<\/p>\n<p>1968.08.11<br \/>\nBAUS held its first Membership \u00a0Meeting. 9 Board of Trustees were elected from the members and according to by-laws of the Association.\u00a0 Then one third of trustees were re-elected every year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1969<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1969.05.<br \/>\nTo celebrate Buddha\u2019s birthday, Mr. C.T. Shen delivered the speech \u201cFive Eyes\u201d. Later the speech was published by \u201cWisdom Torch\u201d in English and Chinese bilingual edition.<\/p>\n<p>1969.10.26<br \/>\nWoo Ju Shen purchased the current TOE building and donated it to BAUS.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1970<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>*Mr. C.T Shen established the \u201cInstitute for Advanced Studies of World Religions (IASWR)\u201d in Westchester NY. 1972, then moved IASWR to the SUNY Stony Brook Campus on Long Island. In 1991, Woo Ju Shen\u2019s memorial fund donated to build a library at Chuang Yen Monastery, the institute thus moved here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1971<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1971.08.29<br \/>\nA Buddhist Service was held in the Cathedral of the Pine, NH. Ven. Lokto headed the ceremony. Mr. C.T Shen delivered a speech: \u201cWhat we can learn from Buddhism\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>1972<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ven. Jen Chun was invited to the Temple of Enlightenment (TOE) from Taiwan. Ven. Ri Chang was invited to accompany him as well. These two masters had significant contribution in spreading the Dharma in America.<\/p>\n<p>Note: Ven. Ri Chang had never been the Abbot of CYM or TOE, or President of BAUS himself. However, the 5th Abbot of Chuang Yen Monastery (CYM), and the 3rd to 5th Priors of CYM were all his disciples.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1973<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1973.1.24<br \/>\n20th Century Mahayana Buddhism Studies master Ven. Yin Shun accepted the invitation from BAUS by Mr. C.T. Shen and then came to America via Tokyo, accompanied by the BAUS \u201cSutra Translation Institute\u201d in Taiwan\u2019s Deputy Director Mr. Fayen Gu. After arriving in the States, he lived at Bodhi House, and was cared for by Ven. Ri Chang.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1974<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1974.09.08<br \/>\nVen. Ming Chi served as the 2nd President of BAUS.<\/p>\n<p>1974.09.09-17<br \/>\nWell-respected Buddhist master Ven. Chan Yun conducted the Amitabha Retreat in the Bodhi Field<\/p>\n<p>1974.09.18<br \/>\nHH the 16th Karmapa visited New York and was greeted at Bodhi Field.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1975<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1975.03.09<br \/>\nA BAUS Membership Card was printed for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>1975.11.02<br \/>\nThe BAUS Board passed the proposal initiated by Mr. C.T. Ming Chi flew to Hong Kong for the collecting of alms. 1976.10.10\u00a0 Ven. Ming Chi, Ven. Jen Chun, Ven. Sheng Yen led the members to make the first trip to the building site of Chuang Yen monastery.<\/p>\n<p>1976.08.15<br \/>\nBAUS organized the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> Buddhist Service in the Pine of the Cathedral, NH: Celebrating the bicentennial of the America to pray for peace and the prosperity of the USA.<\/p>\n<p>1976.03.19<br \/>\nLay Buddhist devotee Zhu Yimin Zhang donated the Kuna-yin porcelain.<\/p>\n<p>1976.05.03<br \/>\nVen. Ven. Sheng Yen was the general editor. The Meditation Hall was also finished in 1977.03.15. Ven. Sheng Yen and Ven. Ri Chang led the students to the Bodhi House for 7 days meditation retreat.<\/p>\n<p>1977.09.11<br \/>\nA 3D model of the Great Buddha Hall based on the design from I.M. Pei was shown in the Temple of Enlightenment.<\/p>\n<p>1977.09.20<br \/>\nMrs. Woo Ju Shen donated a set of the Tripitaka.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1978<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1978.05.14<br \/>\nAmerican youth, Paul Kennedy was ordained in the Temple of Enlightenment. The first one ordained in BAUS.<\/p>\n<p>1978.11.28<br \/>\nThe BAUS Book Fund was established. Member Mr. T.K. Lee volunteered to be in charge of the program in order to print and distribute Buddhism &amp; Buddhist lifestyle related material. Fa Tung assumed the duties of the Abbot of the Temple of Enlightenment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1979<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1979.09.02<br \/>\nBAUS invited Ven. Yan Pei to give a series of Dharma lectures: \u201cThe 2nd Chapter of Vimalakirtinirde\u015ba S\u016btra\u201d every Sunday for 6 weeks. It set the tones of the BAUS Bodhi Dharma series later in 1992.<\/p>\n<p>1979.12.02<br \/>\nVen. The main purpose was to explain Buddhism terminology to beginners for further understanding and practice. Later, Kids were added to the camp in 1989 and then Teens in 1990. Xian Ming conducted the 4 days \u201cTientai School Study Retreat\u201d at Chuang Yen Monastery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1989<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1989.05.27<br \/>\nBoard resolved to add pages to the BAUS Membership Newsletter and renamed it \u201cWisdom Journal.\u201d Member Ms. Lichin Fu volunteered to be in charge of the publication.\u00a0 1989.07.01 The first issue of the \u201cWisdom Journal\u201d was published and is now up to issue #150.<\/p>\n<p>1989.10.15<br \/>\nGreat Buddha Hall Grand Opening Ceremony, respected H.H. 14<sup>th<\/sup> Dalai Lama, Ven. Ming Chi, Ven. Miao Lian led the first 2 days of a 7 day Pure Land Buddhism retreat.<\/p>\n<p>1990.11.04<br \/>\nFo Quang Shan Ven. Xing Yun visited CYM.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1991<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1991.05.12<br \/>\nMother\u2019s Day Garden Party was held for the first time at CYM<\/p>\n<p>1991.07.27<br \/>\nWoo Ju Memorial Library grand opening, the \u201cInstitute for Advanced Studies of World Religions (IASWR)\u201d was moved here, It\u2019s a significant event, state officials and well-respected Buddhist scholars came to celebrate. The library was formally opened to the public later on May 9<sup>th<\/sup>, 1992.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1992<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1992.02.10<br \/>\nA series of \u201cBodhi Dharma\u201d programs started, organized by Mr. T.K. Lee. Many Buddhist masters were invited to give Dharma talks around the nation.<\/p>\n<p>1992.07<br \/>\nBy unusual circumstances, the late Tang dynasty wooden craving of Kuan Yin came to the monastery. Professor Chang-ken Chen successfully restored it to be enshrined in the Kuan Yin Hall. Mr. C.T. Shen wrote an article to portray this special occasion.<\/p>\n<p>1992.01<br \/>\nVen. Xian Ming began to teach \u201cTientai School study group\u201d every Saturday in CYM.<\/p>\n<p>1992.07.05<br \/>\nVen. Ming Quang and Ven. Ji Ru became the Abbot of CYM and Abbot of TOE respectfully.<\/p>\n<p>1992.07<br \/>\nBAUS invited a Thai Buddhist master to teach \u201cSati Meditation\u201d, and had continued giving workshops and retreats up to 2012.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1993<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1993.09.10<br \/>\nThe biggest sitting Buddha statue \u201cVairocana\u201d in the western Hemisphere was completed on this day. With the Buddha sitting in the daylight, a new page of spreading Buddhism had begun.<\/p>\n<p>1993.08<br \/>\nThe first \u201cTibetan Buddhism Study Retreat\u201d was held in the Kuan Yin Hall. The retreat had been held every year up until 2006.<\/p>\n<p>1993<br \/>\nSusan Postal was ordained.<\/p>\n<p>1993.04.12<br \/>\nChan Master Ven. Wei-jue, accompanied by his disciples visited TOE and CYM.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1994<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1994.07.10<br \/>\nBAUS formed \u201cElectronic Buddhadharma Society\u201d (EBS), which is dedicated to converting printed Chinese Buddhist texts into digital formats. It was one of the pioneers in developing methods of digital conversion of printed Buddhist texts and is a collective effort supported by many individuals and organizations.<\/p>\n<p>1994.04.28<br \/>\nAn 18 foot Kuan Yin was erected by the Seven Jewel Lake.<\/p>\n<p>1994.04.17<br \/>\nBAUS Membership meeting was held at Chuang Yen Monastery for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>1994.09.03<br \/>\nTo celebrate BAUS\u2019s 30<sup>th<\/sup> Anniversary, Chuang Yen Monastery held a \u201cFive precept and Bodhisattva precept Retreat\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>1994.09.05<br \/>\nBAUS donated a 15-person van for Putnam county\u2019s senior citizens.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1995<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1995.04<br \/>\nMr. C.T. Shen and Mr. Nan Xuan Shen flew to Taiwan to visit for 13 days and joined the \u201cBuddhism electronic disc conversion conference\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>1995.11.01<br \/>\nThe BAUS website debuted, volunteer Shawn Chang was in charge of the site.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1996<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1996.01.02<br \/>\nChuang Yen Monastery started its first Winter Retreat for 3 months.<\/p>\n<p>1996.01.02<br \/>\nMr. C. T. Shen held a press conference to introduce the first Buddhist multi-media disc in the world.<\/p>\n<\/div><div id=\"whistle-timeline-8300-1426364465\" class=\"whistle-content\"><p><strong>1997<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1997.05.24<br \/>\nGreat Buddha Hall Grand Opening, government officials, Buddhist representatives from all over the world of more than 5000 people participated at this event. A 4 day World Peace Ceremony included, H.H. the 14<sup>th<\/sup> Dalai Lama\u2019s Empowerment Ceremony and his 3 day 37 Bodhisattva practice study retreat; Mahayana Great Compassion Ceremony; Yoga Flaming Mouth Ceremony and the World Buddhist Sangha Youth (WBSY) General Conference.<\/p>\n<p>1997.08.23<br \/>\nAt the \u201cTien tai study group\u201d commencement ceremony, more than 20 monastics graduated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1998<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1998.01.01<br \/>\nVen. Ming Kuang invited representatives from different religions and held a \u201cWorld Peace\u201d ceremony at Chuang Yen Monastery. This has become a tradition and a major event in the monastery calendar.<\/p>\n<p>1998.03.01<br \/>\n\u201cMedical Compassion Society\u201d was formed. Member Wanye Chang and Sue-sue Yang volunteered to in be charge of many disaster aids program, free medical consultation, etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1999<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1999.05.30<br \/>\nVen. Ming Kuang assumed the role of 6<sup>th<\/sup> President of BAUS. Putnam County Executive Mr. Robert Bondi was grateful for the contribution that had been done for the county. Putnam County set this date as \u201cBuddha Day\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>1999.05.31<br \/>\nThe formal installation ceremony of Ven. Shou Yu as the Abbot of CYM.<\/p>\n<p>1999.11.25<br \/>\nRenxiong Huang was then ordained by Ven. Shou Yu and named \u201cKai Tung\u201d. She served in the Gift Shop for many years and was skillful in painting and calligraphy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2000<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2000.03.26<br \/>\n\u201cWorld Journal\u201d hosted C.T. Shen\u2019s Biography book signing event. There were about 200 people who attended. When asked participants\u2019 reflections: most of them expressed that they were deeply grateful for the tangible and intangible help as well as the kindness from Mr. C.T.Shen and his wife Woo Ju Shen. They came here simply just to say to him in person, \u201cThank you\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>2000.06.10<br \/>\nThe great Buddha at Chuang Yen Monastery is known as the Buddha Vairocana. At the turn of the millennium, BAUS invited Sa&#8217;gya Gongma Rinboq to lead \u201cBuddha Vairocana Empowerment Ceremony\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2001<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2001.09.15<br \/>\nTemple of Enlightenment and Chuang Yen Monastery held prayer services for victims in the tragic event of 911. Later in 2001.11.01 donations were collected and handed to the \u201cWorld Trade Center September 11<sup>th<\/sup> Victim Compensation Fund\u201d. On the New Year \u2019s Eve of 2001, BAUS held a \u201cCommunity Unity &amp; World Peach Candle Light Evening Service\u201d. The County Executive and the Town Supervisor came to pray. Ven. Ming Kuang led the monastics to give blessings, more than 1000 people joined the service on that night.<\/p>\n<p>2001.11.15<br \/>\nA \u201cChuang Yen Monastery\u201d sign carved in marble was placed by the entrance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2002<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2002.04.21<br \/>\nWith Mr. Jeffery Wu\u2019s generous donation, Chuang Yen Monastery paved the major roads on the grounds.<\/p>\n<p>2002.08<br \/>\nThe formal installation ceremony of Ven. Ji Ru as the Abbot of CYM.<\/p>\n<p>2002.09.09<br \/>\nAn antique Kuan Yin, donated by Wen jie Wong and Jie Sun, was enshrined in front of the Great Buddha.<\/p>\n<p>2002.05<br \/>\nA 3 day Lotus Sutra Study Symposium was held at Chuang Yen Monastery, interfaith religious prayers were also included in the program.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2003<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2003.07<br \/>\nThe 18 Arhant statues and the White Stone Buddha arrived at the monastery. The former were placed by the Bodhi Path and the latter by the entrance<\/p>\n<p>2003.05.28<br \/>\nThai nurse Ms. Dow ordained by Ven. Ji Ru, named \u201cKung Dow\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>2004<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2004.05.29<br \/>\nBuddhist masters came together to celebrate the 40<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of BAUS<\/p>\n<p>2004.05.30<br \/>\n\u201cBodhi Path\u201d completion ceremony was held in front of Great Buddha Hall<\/p>\n<p><strong>2005<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2005.02.01<br \/>\nBAUS donated $15,000 to Putnam County to provide transpiration vehicles for senior citizens.<\/p>\n<p>2005.10.16<br \/>\nMeitreya Relic Exhibition held at Chuang Yen Monastery<\/p>\n<p>2005.09.09<br \/>\nA 3 year Dharma Teacher Training Program started, led by Ven.
