SUMMARY:An Introduction to Pali
DESCRIPTION:Come spend some time this summer with an introduction to Pali\, the language in which the texts of early Buddhism are recorded. Pali\, part of the Indic family of languages\, is based upon the vernacular languages of northern India used at the time of the Buddha. By learning the basics of Pali grammar and vocabulary\, students can begin to engage directly with the Buddha’s teachings\, leading them to understand the thought world in which the Buddha lived with a richness that cannot be captured in translation. No prior knowledge of Pali is required. The course will start with the basics\, showing students how the alphabet is organized and how to find words in a dictionary. Basic grammar will be covered in depth. Students will begin to read passages of the Pali canon themselves.

SUMMARY:Mind Over Movie: "Saving Mes Aynak"
DESCRIPTION:Saving Mes Aynak it’s a races against time to save a 5\,000year-old archaeological site in Afghanistan from imminent demolition. A Chinese state-owned mining company is closing in on the ancient site\, eager to harvest $100 billion dollars worth of copper buried directly beneath the ruins. Only 10% of Mes Aynak has been excavated\, though\, and some believe future discoveries at the site have the potential to redefine the history of Afghanistan and the history of Buddhism itself. Qadir Temori and his fellow Afghan archaeologists face an impossible battle against the Chinese\, the Taliban and local politics to save their cultural heritage from likely erasure. \nLight refreshment will be served.\nFor Further information\, please contact: library@baus.org\n

SUMMARY:Mind Over Movie: "Journey from Zanskar"
DESCRIPTION:Journey from Zanskar is about how two humble monks\, far from their Buddhist temple\, honor their vows by supporting these remote village children to get a Buddhist education. Zanskar is one of the last remaining original Tibetan Buddhist societies with a continuous untainted lineage dating back thousands of years. In nearby Tibet and Ladakh\, in Sikkim\, Bhutan\, and Nepal\, traditional Tibetan Buddhist culture is dying. Zanskar\, ringed by high Himalayan mountains in northwest India\, one of the most remote places on the planet\, has been safe until now. \nLight refreshment will be served.\nFor Further information\, please contact: library@baus.org\n

SUMMARY:A Course in the Anguttara Nikaya with Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi
DESCRIPTION:Studying the Buddha’s Words\nThe Numerical Discourses of the Buddha: The Ones\nThe Anguttara Nikaya arranges discourses of the Buddha according to a numerical pattern\, grouping together suttas that revolve around the same number of items\, from “The Ones” to “The Elevens.” This first series on the Anguttara examines the entire chapter on the Ones—a short chapter that nevertheless covers many important themes in the Buddha’s teaching. The class starts at 9:00 am with a 50-minute silent meditation. This is followed by a discussion of the suttas from 10:00 am to 11:20 am. The approach in this class is more informal and conversational than in the previous class on the Majjhima Nikaya. Since the suttas in the Ones are very short\, only the dates are given\, not the names or topics of the suttas. \nLocation: Chuang Yen Monastery\, 2020 Route 301\, Carmel\, NY 10512\, in the Woo Ju Library.
