SUMMARY:An Introduction to Pali
DESCRIPTION:Come spend some time this summer with an introduction to Pali\, the language in which the texts of early Buddhism are recorded. Pali\, part of the Indic family of languages\, is based upon the vernacular languages of northern India used at the time of the Buddha. By learning the basics of Pali grammar and vocabulary\, students can begin to engage directly with the Buddha’s teachings\, leading them to understand the thought world in which the Buddha lived with a richness that cannot be captured in translation. No prior knowledge of Pali is required. The course will start with the basics\, showing students how the alphabet is organized and how to find words in a dictionary. Basic grammar will be covered in depth. Students will begin to read passages of the Pali canon themselves.

\nBy learning the basics of Pali grammar and vocabulary\, students can begin to engage directly with the Buddha’s teachings\, leading them to understand the thought world in which the Buddha lived with a richness that cannot be captured in translation. \nNo prior knowledge of Pali is required. The course will start with the basics\, showing students how the alphabet is organized and how to find words in a dictionary. Basic grammar will be covered in depth. Students will begin to read passages of the Pali canon themselves.

SUMMARY:Mind Over Movie: "Saving Mes Aynak"
DESCRIPTION:Saving Mes Aynak it’s a races against time to save a 5\,000year-old archaeological site in Afghanistan from imminent demolition. A Chinese state-owned mining company is closing in on the ancient site\, eager to harvest $100 billion dollars worth of copper buried directly beneath the ruins. Only 10% of Mes Aynak has been excavated\, though\, and some believe future discoveries at the site have the potential to redefine the history of Afghanistan and the history of Buddhism itself. Qadir Temori and his fellow Afghan archaeologists face an impossible battle against the Chinese\, the Taliban and local politics to save their cultural heritage from likely erasure. \nLight refreshment will be served.\nFor Further information\, please contact: library@baus.org\n
