Discovering Buddhism in China Today
A Slideshow Presentation by Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi
July 27 at 2–4 pm in Kuan Yin Hall
This past March, BAUS’s president Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi made a three-week visit to China, where he explored the present-day manifestations of Buddhism in Beijing, Zhejiang Province, Fujian Province, and Wutai Shan, the sacred mountain of the Bodhisattva Manjushri. Using his cell phone camera, he captured a rich palette of scenes from the world of Chinese Buddhism. His travels showed that, after decades of decline and repression, Buddhism in China today has bounced back with fresh vigor and vibrant energy.
Contemporary Buddhism in China flourishes in a rich diversity of settings: in large historical monasteries, monastic study centers, small temples, and people’s homes. Most importantly, he found, the flame of Buddhist faith and devotion burns brightly in people’s minds and hearts.
On Sunday, July 27, at 2 pm, Ven. Bodhi will share with BAUS friends and visitors a slideshow drawn from his illuminating journey into the fascinating world of Buddhism in present-day China. This visually captivating presentation will reveal how Buddhism continues to shape the cultural, social, and spiritual landscape of China today.
Those unable to attend in person can register here to join online and will receive a link.
