Welcome
to the official website of the BAUS Youth Group, an affiliate
of the Buddhist Association of the United States
(BAUS). We're
a diverse group of students and young professionals who take some
time from our busy schedules to participate in volunteer activities
and social events to help strengthen our friendship bonds and
our practice of Buddhism. Our membership is primarily drawn from
the New York area and neighboring states, because that allows
ready and convenient access to the facilities at Chuang-Yen Monastery
(CYM), located in upstate Carmel, New York. Every year, one of
our largest projects involves the organization and running of
the annual BAUS Summer Camp, held at CYM, during the July 4th
weekend. Our membership assists in planning the Camp schedules
and provides much of the volunteer counseling staff. If you are
new to this site, feel free to read about the background of our
group and how we got started.
BACKGROUND
Towards
the end of the 1999 Summer Camp, the counselors and staff had
a meeting to discuss the formation of a Youth Group. Three officers
were elected during the meeting, and, since then, we have done
a lot of groundbreaking work for the organization. Why form this
Youth Group, you may ask? Well, for some of us, going to Summer
Camp is practically a tradition (Fireworks during the Fourth of
July? What's that like?). During Camp, we've met some great people
and shared a few laughs and memorable experiences. And, despite
being faced with Herculean tasks such as mediating camper pillow
fights, the sampling of some rather interesting meat substitutes
during mealtimes, and the never-ending struggle to keep campers,
and ourselves, at least somewhat awake during lectures, we've
somehow gotten to know each other, and have forged some lasting
friendships. Unfortunately, Camp occurs but once a year. But why
should we stop there? We thought that it would be a great idea
to meet outside of Summer Camp, every so often, and do the things
that we wanted to do. So, the Youth Group was formed as an organized
and efficient resource for us to keep in touch and get together
several times throughout the year. Our first official event was
a Thanksgiving feast in November of that same year, followed by
a ski trip to the Poconos in January. Earlier during the day of
our November Thanksgiving feast, we as a group visited a nursing
home in Long Island to bring some holiday cheer to the residents.
It was a very rewarding way for us to give back to the community
and a way to practice Buddhism. If you're interested in becoming
a member, or would just like to learn more, check out our membership
section for contact information.
