What Is Health?

Ray Kent June 2001

Before we can have health we must know what health is completely. The ancient Chinese proverb - "If you have disease, don't look for a cure, fine your center." It took me a long time to figure out this gem and to fully appreciate that the understanding of and application of this wisdom will allow us to finally define health. There are many organization fighting for causes, everything is being saved, the earth, the great body of water… Every creature has its own organization - Save the Wolf, the Spotted Owl, the Salmon, the Tiger, the Koala bear, the Elephant, all of the birds and some of the fish… but we have no organization to save us, all of us!

We have organization to punish and reward, we have houses of worship attempting to bring us closer to God and we have a system of medicine that totally interferes with the body's ability to prevent disease. The medical system interfered with and created diseases by eliminating the signals that there is an underlying problem, finding our center comes as we clear our minds of all the guesswork of others. We are living our lives by their discoveries and inventions and as a result we have crowded our minds with their opinions. We don't know who we are, we call ourselves Buddhists, Christians, Jews and Hindus, we tried to live our life by teachings that men constantly argues about and goes to war over. We spent billions looking for a cure and we should have spent it finding our center. There is no cure; there never will be a cure. The proverb was right, "Don't look for a cure, look for your center." And of course the big question is: How do you find your center in a wildness of unpleasant symptoms that are making our lives miserable and short?

Psychiatry was born when the symptoms begin to affect the mind and the medical doctors failed to see the correlation between the body and the mind. When depression and other mental illnesses came, they tried to wrestle the mind back to normal with Prozac and Zoloff. Because of our irritation and weaknesses, we developed a herd mentality and allowed our mind to be controlled by educated heads and trendsetters who were nor qualified. We were born suspended between two realities, the one we were born into and the one we longed for. So, forcing the mind to cheer up while the total body condition remained unaltered is to make for dangerous circumstances, organ failure and finally out-of-balance behavior. And by being treated with medicine and talk therapy, the mental imbalance continues and worsens.

We are dying the way we die because of the way we live. The schools and universities are turning out the mentality that is engineering all of this madness. The system of education is indeed the highest form of abuse, both for the youngsters and oldsters. It supports all of the mistakes that were made. It supports medicine and medical theories; it supports how we use the soil and grow our food; it supports industries that pollute and cheat; it supports marriage that brings much unhappiness with a 50% failure rate; it supports the fact that the little ones are born with diseases and spend a short lifetime taking medicine and it supports honoring dead doctors and scientists for their discovery of penicillin, polio vaccines, vitamin C. We have believed blinded and scarred the deepest needs and hopes of the human soul.

The Chinese wisdom was absolutely correct - there can never be a cure for a set of symptoms that are telling us loud and clear that there is an underlying cause to all that is wrong. Regardless of the different symptoms, the cause remains the same. The symptoms are peculiar to our genetic blueprint and its conditions. Our genetic weaknesses determine individual symptoms, i.e. a weak pancreas leads to Diabetics. The biggest mistake of all has been addressing the symptoms and ignoring the cause. It was brilliant on the part of the medical system to figure out all the wrong answers. They can make a 65-year-old woman have twins, they can twist a mad mind sane with drugs, a depressed mind cheerful, while interfering with the body's ability to lead a very ling and healthy life.

The simple and beautiful truth about healing is under attack, not just from the medical and drug industry but even the so-called natural or holistic practitioners and health food storeowners, the vitamin industry and the people who writes books about the guesswork of others. I believe that we have many choices but we are not choosey enough and we find ourselves in the middle of many conflicting theories. We were born full of wrong opinions about health and about life. The sad truth is that the way we view disease is the worst possible way to view disease. It has weakened us and we have become diseased.

We are potentially the most elegant of all the elegance on the earth, and we are nowhere near our potential. Our parts are weak and our systems are inefficient, our mind are not clear and we wake up each day tired. Our natural tastes have been altered by cooked food, chili, salt and meat. Our teeth are weak and our eyes are failing. The failure of medicine throughout the world to deal with the cause of diseases is an international catastrophe.

Now we know how to get better and the answers did not come from the test tubes and microscopes but came from our deepest instinctual memory: an intelligent approach to fasting, a moderate application of sunshine, a diet of unaltered fruits and vegetables with nuts and seeds and all of this with a desire to get better and enjoy the greatest responsibility of all, our self-care. There is no one to blame for all the mistakes that have been made. Don't waste time pointing fingers. Begin to open doors to a better and secured future.
